Can You Apply for or Change a Thai Visa While in Thailand?
Understand the difference between overseas e-Visa applications, changes of visa status and extensions of stay inside Thailand.
Three processes that people often confuse
A new Thai visa issued by a Thai embassy, an in-country change of visa status, and an extension of permission to stay are different administrative processes. Having legal permission to be in Thailand today does not mean you qualify for every in-country process or can submit an overseas e-Visa application from Bangkok.
Applying through Thai e-Visa
The official Thai e-Visa portal explicitly states that e-Visa applications can only be made by applicants who are currently outside Thailand. The mission responsible for your actual location may request local-residence evidence. If you are already in Thailand, filing an e-Visa application while claiming to be outside the country is not an appropriate workaround.
Changes of status and extensions in Thailand
Some circumstances may permit a change of visa type or an extension through Thai Immigration, but eligibility depends on current immigration permission, purpose, supporting documents, timing and the local office. An extension of stay is not a fresh embassy visa. Do not assume a tourist entry can always be converted into ED, retirement or another category.
Why timing matters
Check your current admission stamp, any extension already granted and the last day you may remain. Start evidence collection well before that deadline. A pending enquiry or a submitted request does not automatically preserve permission to stay unless the relevant immigration procedure expressly does so.
Documents and address issues
Applicants may need passport records, financial evidence, sponsor or school documents, a Thai address and other route-specific paperwork. A TM30 residence notification is a separate landlord/house-master reporting process; it should not be confused with a visa-status decision.
When to seek individual assessment
A careful review should record nationality, current visa or exemption, entry date, permission-to-stay expiry, intended new category and location of application. These details determine whether the sensible next step is Immigration advice inside Thailand or an embassy application abroad.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use Thai e-Visa while physically in Thailand? The portal says no. Can I extend my stay without leaving? Possibly, depending on category and Immigration rules. Does an appointment protect against overstay? Not by itself.
